Rice + Westfield Bondi Juction Woolworths & Bush’s Fresh Meat Butcher 12 June 2010

We love Westfield Bondi Junction. Thank you Mr Lowy. I particularly love the Harbour Room food court, so stylish. Today the Fabette’s & I shared prawn fried rice from Ginger & Lime. Sublime more like it, we bought seconds. Mini-Me Fabette waxed lyrically over the ‘scrambled egg’ in the fried rice. I reminded her I had added that to my version. No response from her other than to continue to praise the culinary talents of the chef embodied in the plate before us. Then Teen Mstr Fab and I discussed how it was made. Why was mine a culinary nightmare v their culinary equivalent to winning the World Cup? Sauces? It had rice, peas, corn, omlette. So did mine. Flavour was better. Was it the wok v frypan? I was determined to buy ingredients that would, not replicate Ginger & Lime’s version, but improve mine. I decided oyster & fish sauces were required.

So off to Woolworths we went. I knew I needed more rice, hence the theme. I discovered Sunrice rice is sourced from many places around the globe. I purchased the Sunrice Pour and Store long grain 1.5 kg pack, as it was the only rice that was Australian grown. Sorry the medium grain wholegrain brown rice 1 and 2 kg are Australian grown. Sunrice organic 750g, USA grown rice packed in Australia. Sunrice basmati 1 kg, from Pakistan. Sunrice long grain 2 kg, from Thailand. Koala rice (a Sunrice owned brand – I went to their website) long grain 2 kg from Thailand. Homebrand 1 kg from Pakistan.

I went to the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia’s website to discover more about the Australian rice industry. Australia exports 85% of its rice, the remaining 15% is sold here. According to the RGA website, rice is Australia’s third largest cereal grain export, and the ninth largest agricultural export. The website also states the “Australian rice industry generates more than $500 million from value-added exports annually“. Maybe rice is imported to make up shortfalls in the domestic market. Afterall, if there is a commercial agreement to supply x amount of rice, you have to, or be in breach.

I’m really not sure how Australia’s free trade agreements are benefitting us. And others are questioning it as well. It’s not my area of expertise, nor do I want to come across as discriminatory. I suppose it’s strategically important, but I really think Australia generally gets the sucker end of the deal. My opinion based on little other than basic observations and reading the business sections of the newspapers.

Ok that’s my serious side over with. I really could go another plate of that fried rice, without having to share with the children 🙂 Here’s the contents of my receipt – check out how I am resolving MY fried rice dilemma. PS “10 cents off per litre fuel saving has been added to your everyday rewards card” is on the bottom of the docket. Eeek the moral dilemma!!

Pantry Nightmares

On the weekend I cracked. The pantry was a bloated nightmare, with items flung in higgley piggley. I have a healthy dose of OCD when it comes to organising things in places. Receipts for everything we have ever bought with a warranty or potential to be claimable if needed on contents insurance are kept in a box, in snaplock bags. You know, the instruction booklet, warranty details and receipt are in an appropriate sized snaplock bag. All in one spot.

Bathroom towels are in the cupboard in their sizes (not colours, that’s too OCD for me, having said that we have 4 colours and I did fret over the lovely bathsheets I was given for Christmas as they did not go with the colours of my other towels, but I got over it in a week).

Sheets are in stacked in sets and sizes. Blankets are on the top shelf. The iron, Mr Fabulous, goes in the cupboard in the hall, not left in the laundry. Tissues are in my walk-in wardrobe so I know if we are running low.

I have shallow plastic baskets on the shelves in the pantry, to keep it orderly. Bulk items at the bottom of the pantry, containers cereal is decanted into. It’s not showroom catalogue style, but it was neat. But this orderliness apparently did not resonate with the other members of the family (I can forgive Mini-Me Fabette, she’s 5). SO, after struggling to fit the groceries in (purchases to follow), I got my Chairman Mao hat on and explained to my family we were, as a fun family activity, going to empty the pantry, wash the shelves and baskets, and reorganise the pantry.

We all had to do it so everyone would know what was in there. It was annoying to know you had something and couldn’t find it. There were no squabbles, and at the end, everyone was well aware of what was in there (2 opened packs of porridge now in one plastic container; half pack of rice bubbles and half pack of rice puffs mixed into one plastic container). All the baking items are together, I had 3 packets of glace cherries, go figure! And no plain flour (must be why my Masterchef donuts turned out the way they did).

Fab! Should’ve taken before and after pictures. I really, really want a walk-in pantry. When I was a teenager I wanted a SAAB convertible…how priorities change.

I have a stack of receipts to record, along with the receipt from the servo. Mr Fabulous went to a Woolworths servo today – normally we go to the local independent. BUT, we had a special, soon to expire “12 cents a litre off ” and we buy premium petrol. On a $70.50 fill up the tank jobby, it saved $6.46. Which Mr Fabulous promptly blew on a mini Willy Wonka shop…read further to see how much a 200g Cadbury Dairy milk cost at Woolworths Petrol Surry Hills…
