MMMM Bacon – Woolworths Marrickville Metro, Coles Surry Hills & IGA Waterloo

I’ve been busy – to quote John Lennon “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”. I had an inspired idea for dinner tonight. Bacon & egg rolls.

I managed to burn the fabulous mustard marinated roast beef last night & make the lumpiest, driest yet somehow greasy mushroom gravy. Nothing salvageable from that roast, it was literally tougher than boots. It was an awesome display of bad cooking. The oven timer was stuck & I didn’t check the oven until it was time to get the potatoes on for mash & steam the broad beans before giving them a light fry with garlic. At least they were edible. The oven is jinxed. It took me twelve months to work out how I was managing to simultaneously burn & undercook items in the oven.

I have discovered since buying my fabulously expensive Jamie Oliver frypan, & getting remedial frypan use lessons from the lovely salesman at Myer, that I can now make super omelettes. Apparently cooking spray wrecks the non-stick coating on frypans. So I have tried the technique shared to me by Mark at Myer Parramatta, and now I am a l’egg- gend. I didn’t intend on buying a frypan which cost over $100 because I trash them, and mentioned this to the salesman. Essentially I said something along the lines of “I need a frypan I won’t trash”. I thought I had a sturdy looking one in my hand, but he upsold me, explaining the weight of the pan blah blah blah…made sense at the time, & has proven accurate. If I was still using cooking spray the pan would have a tar-like patina to it by now. So there you go.

I note that Coles is promoting “regular prices are down on products customers buy most…and they’re staying down!” – light milk is still $3.96 for 3L. IGA’s Daisy brand full cream is $3.95 for 3 L.

Used the self-serve checkout, which is extra-ordinarily frustrating. That ‘item missing from the bagging area’ message drives me half insane. Mini-me Fabette finishes the job. I almost walked out from the Bondi Junction self-serve checkout recently leaving $150.00 cash hanging out of the cash out dispenser due to the aforementioned combination of child & ‘item missing from the bagging area’ white noise. Luckily I work well under pressure, because that combination is extreme.

Woolworths & Bush’s Fresh Meats Bondi Junction 19/03/2010

One of the things I love about living in Sydney is supermarket shopping hours.  I can go grocery shopping at midnight Friday night if I so desire.  And because this mother of two wants to be out at midnight on a Friday night, I have!

Don’t worry, the children are sleeping  in the carpark – just kidding.

BACON

I bought bacon at Bush’s Fresh meats.  It’s the butcher opposite Woolworths. $16.99 / kg, but worth every cent.

Pre-packed bacon sold in Australia is made from imported pork, and I prefer to support local industry.  See the link below:
